Governors Island “Tunnel”

This weekend, I did something that I haven’t done since before COVID-19. I went to Governors Island. To get there, I had to

  • take a bus to the railroad station
  • take a Long Island Railroad train to Penn Station
  • take a NYC subway train to the Governors Island Ferry terminal
  • take a ferry to Governors Island

Scary stuff after almost 13 months of not taking mass transit… or was it? Surprisingly, it wasn’t that scary. Apparently, my desire to finally get to Governors Island after four previous weather-thwarted attempts in the past month and a half overrode any fear or anxiety. It felt almost normal. It also proved that I hadn’t forgotten over forty years worth of commuting skills. I made excellent connections, and navigated like a pro. It was reassuring and weird at the same time, and I had a wonderful day on the island.

If this is the new normal, I can deal with it.
